In the field of nursing, scientific communities play an important role in supporting excellence in practice, education, leadership and research. One of the most internationally recognized organizations in this area is Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, commonly known as Sigma.

Founded on 5th October, 1922, Sigma has grown into a global nursing honor society that brings together nurses, educators, researchers, students, and leaders who are committed to improving health and healthcare through knowledge, service, and professional development. First Finnish Sigma chapter, Alpha Beta Nu, was charted on 6th October, 2022, exactly 100 years after Sigma’s founding.

A Global Community for Nursing Excellence

Sigma was established to recognize academic and professional excellence in nursing. Over the years, it has expanded far beyond its original setting and now includes members from more than 100 countries and regions around the world. Its international reach reflects the increasingly global nature of healthcare: nurses today face shared challenges such as health inequalities, ageing populations, workforce shortages, digital transformation, and the need for evidence-based practice. By connecting nurses in different positions across borders, Sigma provides a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing research, and strengthening professional identity.

Supporting Evidence-Based Practice

One of Sigma’s central contributions is its emphasis on evidence-based nursing practice. High-quality nursing care depends not only on clinical experience but also on research, critical thinking, and the ability to apply new knowledge in real healthcare settings.

Sigma supports this mission through activities such as:

  • publishing nursing research and professional resources,
  • organizing conferences and educational events,
  • supporting leadership development,
  • offering networking opportunities,
  • promoting scholarly work among students and professionals.

In June 24th to 26th June, Alpha Beta Nu, Department of Nursing Science, University of Eastern Finland with Sigma European Region organize the 8th Sigma European Regional Conference, Kuopio. Just an honor for the quite new chapter and our university. We are waiting nearly 250 nurses, leaders and researchers from over 30 countries. Such a great opportunity create international networks. New members are welcomed to Alpha Beta Nu chapter.

Leadership and professional growth

Nursing leadership is needed at every level of healthcare: in direct patient care, education, research, administration, policy, and community health. Sigma highlights the importance of nurses as leaders who can influence decision-making and improve health systems.

Membership in an international professional society can help nurses develop confidence, build networks, and become more active in shaping the future of the profession. It also offers recognition for commitment to excellence, which can motivate nurses to continue developing their expertise throughout their careers.

Why Sigma Matters Today?

The role of nurses has become increasingly visible in recent years. Global health crises, demographic changes, and healthcare system pressures have shown how essential nurses are to patient safety, public health, and continuity of care.

Organizations like Sigma matter because they create structures for collaboration and professional advancement. They remind us that nursing is not only about responding to immediate needs, but also about building knowledge, improving systems, and advocating for better health outcomes.
